In kilns, silica-mullite bricks primarily perform the following functions:

1. Resisting high-temperature wear and erosion: This is the most prominent function of silica-mullite bricks. The extremely high hardness of silicon carbide (Mohs hardness up to 9.5) gives silica-mullite bricks excellent wear resistance, enabling them to effectively resist the erosion from high-temperature materials and dust moving at high speeds within the rotary kiln. In practical applications, their service life can be 1.5 to 2 times that of high-alumina bricks, and 3 to 5 times that of high-alumina bricks, making them particularly suitable for transition zones, cooling zones, and other areas without kiln lining protection and experiencing severe wear.

2. Withstanding severe temperature fluctuations (thermal shock resistance): Frequent start-ups and shutdowns and temperature changes in kilns can lead to refractory material spalling. The high thermal conductivity of silicon carbide helps the brick body quickly homogenize temperature and reduce internal stress. Mullite itself has a low coefficient of thermal expansion; the combination of these two properties gives silicon-mullite bricks excellent thermal shock resistance, making them less prone to cracking and peeling during use.

3. Resistance to high-temperature chemical erosion: The dense structure of silicon-mullite bricks and the high chemical inertness of their main mineral phases effectively resist the erosion of alkaline atmospheres or materials within the kiln, protecting the kiln shell from damage. Their load-bearing softening temperature typically exceeds 1500℃, reaching up to 1650℃ or higher, sufficient to withstand high temperatures without deformation.

Applications and Limitations: Silicon-mullite bricks are ideal for the transition zone of cement rotary kilns and are also widely used in the decomposition zone, preheating zone, and grate cooler. However, due to their relatively high thermal conductivity, they may result in significant heat loss from the kiln shell, which is a trade-off in their application. Currently, to meet the needs of different areas, upgraded products such as high-performance silicon-mullite red bricks and silicon-mullite composite bricks with insulation functions have been developed.

Reverberatory furnaces are crucial thermal equipment in copper smelting processes. Many copper producers choose reverberatory furnaces for refining crude copper. Reverberatory furnaces have a simple structure and are easy to maintain.

Problems Encountered During Reverberatory Furnace Operation

reverberatory furnace

1. Uneven Furnace Temperature Distribution

The operating temperature is typically between 1200℃ and 1450℃. Excessive temperature in the furnace head combustion zone can easily damage the furnace roof hanging bricks. Therefore, the appropriate selection of refractory materials is crucial for ensuring safe operation, extending furnace lining life, and reducing production costs.

2. Concentrated Loss at the Slag Line Area

The area where molten copper and slag alternately contact molten metal and oxide slag, resulting in a corrosion rate 2-3 times higher than in ordinary areas.

3. Potential Risk of Copper Leakage and Bulging

Liquid copper penetrates the interior of the refractory bricks, solidifies and expands at low temperatures, causing bulging and deformation of the furnace bottom, posing a risk of copper leakage.

Refractory Material Selection

magnesia chrome Brick

Select materials according to the different operating conditions in different areas of the furnace.

1. Slag Line Area

Preferred: Directly bonded magnesia-chrome bricks / Electrofused rebonded magnesia-chrome bricks
High-chromium magnesia-chrome bricks are preferred, as the chromium component forms a dense protective layer, preventing slag penetration.

2. Furnace Bottom

Operating Conditions: Long-term immersion in liquid copper + refining slag; molten copper easily penetrates the brick pores, causing bulging and copper leakage after cooling.

Directly Bonded Magnesia-Chrome Bricks

Advantages: Dense, low porosity; extremely strong resistance to copper penetration; resistant to alkaline refining slag; high softening point under high-temperature load.

Talking about silica bricks advantages, the main point is they stand up to very high heat without changing volume much after the initial heating.

When you check the silica brick composition, it is mostly SiO₂, usually over 94% or 96%. We crush raw silica stone, mix it with a little lime milk, and fire it slow. This makes it a great acid silica refractory brick for glass tanks and non-ferrous smelting kilns.

silica fire brick

1.Core silica brick properties

If you look at our silica brick datasheet, you see the real numbers we test in the lab.

The silica brick density is usually around 2.33 to 2.35 g/cm3. This true density is very important for holding the kiln structure tight.

Another big thing is the silica brick thermal conductivity. It conducts heat very well above 600°C, which helps your furnace save heating energy.

Because of these solid silica brick properties, the brick does not soften or fail easily under high load stress (Refractoriness under load is around 1620-1670°C).

silica brick company

We control the silica brick specifications strictly. When you heat up a new kiln, the brick expands. You must leave expansion joints. But after 600°C, the volume becomes very stable, keeping your kiln safe for a long time.

2.Main silica brick uses in kilns

For silica brick application, it performs best in hot blast stoves, coke ovens, and glass melting furnace roofs.

In non-ferrous metallurgy kilns, acid slag eats normal bricks fast. But a high-quality silica fire brick resists acid slag very well.

We supply many silica brick dimensions. The standard straight size is 230x114x65mm. But in our workshop, we press a lot of custom wedge shapes for arch roofs and side walls.

The specific silica brick uses dictate the exact mold we use on our heavy press machines.

Silica fire brick is a primary type of refractory material that we produce at Ruitai Lianxin for high-temperature applications. If you operate heavy industrial kilns or furnaces, you likely use this type of silica refractory fire brick in specific areas.

It is not a brick for everything, but where it works, it works very well because of its unique chemical nature. We have been manufacturing these bricks for many years and know how to make them durable.

silica brick company

1.What makes our silica brick special?

The main point about silica brick composition is that it is made almost entirely of SiO₂. We use high-quality raw quartzite, so the SiO2 content is usually above 96%. This high purity gives the silica brick properties that other bricks do not have. For example, silica fire brick has excellent resistance to acid slag attack.

Also, it does not soften under load until it gets very close to its melting point. It remains strong at temperatures where other bricks might deform.
When it heats up, it expands slightly, which helps seal the joints in a furnace roof. We control the silica brick density during pressing to ensure good mechanical strength.

2.Where are silica bricks used?

The biggest silica brick application is the crown and roof of glass melting furnaces. The brick stays strong and doesn’t drop material into the glass melt.

Ruitai Lianxin silica bricks

Another major use is in the heating chambers and walls of coke ovens. Because silica has good heat transfer when it’s very hot (good silica brick thermal conductivity at working temperature), it is perfect for cooking coal into coke.

These fire bricks are also used in hot blast stoves for iron making. It is truly a specialized silica brick refractory choice for these heavy industries.

3.Specifications and customization

We offer many standard silica brick specifications. For normal repairs or standard kiln builds, we maintain stock of common shapes and sizes. You can check our standard silica brick dimensions in our product tables.

However, we know that many industrial furnaces require special shapes, especially for roof arches and burner blocks. Our silica brick factory has a dedicated workshop for making custom molds based on your drawings.

If you need technical data to compare, just ask us for a silica brick datasheet or our complete silica brick catalogue. We make sure the specifications match your engineering requirements.

As an experienced silica brick exporter, we know how to pack the bricks securely so they do not chip or crack during sea transport. When you look for a reliable silica brick company for your next furnace project, we are ready to supply.

1.Silica brick composition and specs

In our factory, silica brick composition is strict. We keep SiO2 content above 94%, often hitting 96% for glass furnace roofs. This is a basic workshop rule.

For silica brick specifications, we make standard silica brick dimensions like 230x114x65mm, but for glass melting tank crowns, we press large, complex wedge shapes. The fit must be tight so no flame leaks out.

If you check our silica brick catalogue or ask for a detailed silica brick datasheet, you will see we focus on real factory test numbers. We know the exact shrinkage and expansion limits.

2.Real silica brick properties and heat

Why use a silica fire brick instead of others? Because at high temperatures, it holds the heavy structure without bending. The silica brick density we control is very specific. True density is kept under 2.34g/cm3. This means the brick will not expand and crack your kiln when it heats up.

Ruitai Lianxin- silica mullite fire brick

Silica brick thermal conductivity is also key to keep the temperature right. The basic silica brick refractory limit is around 1690℃, and its softening point under heavy load is very high, usually above 1620℃. This is why the glass furnace roof does not collapse.

3.Silica brick application

Main silica brick uses are the roof and superstructure of glass melting furnaces, and also hot blast stoves in metallurgy. We know this silica brick application well.

Ruitai Lianxin is a direct silica refractory brick exporter. We send refractory materials to industrial partners in India, Bangladesh, and Vietnam all the time.

Our silica brick price is direct. We are a solid silica fire brick company. If you need to order silica bricks or any other refractory bricks, please feel free to contact us. We will reply to you and provide you with a quote as soon as possible within 24 hours.

The specific classification is explained below.

1. Classification by Performance Grade

This is the most mainstream and standardized classification method in the industry. Based on the key high-temperature mechanical index of load softening temperature, silica-mullite bricks are divided into different grades to suit different kiln locations with varying temperature conditions.

GM-1680 Grade: Load softening temperature ≥1680℃, with optimal overall performance. Al₂O₃ content is typically ≥65%, bulk density ≥2.65 g/cm³, and compressive strength ≥90 MPa. Suitable for areas with the highest temperatures and most intense erosion, such as the secondary firing zone (transition zone) of large cement rotary kilns.

GM-1650 Grade: Load softening temperature ≥1650℃, the mainstream product in the market. Al₂O₃ content ≥63%, bulk density ≥2.60 g/cm³. Widely used in the transition zones before and after cement rotary kilns.

GM-1550 grade: Load softening temperature ≥1550℃, good economic efficiency. Al₂O₃ content ≥60%, bulk density ≥2.55 g/cm³, thermal shock stability (12 cycles) is superior to the former two. Mostly used in relatively low-temperature decomposition zones, preheaters, and tertiary air ducts.

2. Classification by product characteristics and structure

Silica-mullite red brick: Modified by introducing andalusite and other raw materials, it possesses superior thermal shock stability (thermal shock resistance up to 25 cycles or more, far exceeding the 10 cycles of ordinary silica-mullite bricks), hence its reddish color. It has stronger resistance to spalling under conditions of drastic temperature differences.

Silica-mullite composite brick: A product with a functional gradient structure. The working layer uses the high wear-resistant formula of silica-mullite bricks, while the insulation layer uses a low thermal conductivity aluminosilicate material. The two layers are tightly bonded through a special process. This design, while ensuring high temperature resistance and erosion resistance, significantly reduces the thermal conductivity, effectively lowering the temperature of the rotary kiln outer wall and achieving energy conservation and consumption reduction.

3. Classification by Application Scenarios

Silica-mullite bricks are “customized” products specifically designed for the service environment of cement rotary kilns, but their sub-categories have expanded to other fields.

Cement Kiln Dedicated Series: Covers key components of rotary kilns such as the transition zone, decomposition zone, cooler, and tertiary air ducts.

Metallurgical/Chemical Series: Developed for industrial kilns with special requirements for wear resistance and corrosion resistance, such as those used in molten iron pretreatment, hot blast stoves, or hazardous waste incinerators.

In summary, in practical engineering, the most common classification method is selection based on grade (GM-1680/1650/1550). If there are special requirements for thermal shock resistance or energy conservation, silica-mullite red bricks or silica-mullite composite bricks will be preferred.

The reverberatory furnace is a horizontal rectangular structure with four openings depending on the process: a charging port, an oxidation duct, a slag discharge port, and a copper outlet.

Copper refining in a reverberatory furnace

Charging Port:

Liquid crude copper, solid cold crude copper, electrolytic residue, scrap copper, copper blocks, and returned slag enter the furnace through the charging port for oxidation. During the melting stage, the material layer and molten pool height can be observed through the charging port.

Oxidation Duct:

The oxidation duct equipped with a water-cooled jacket. Blow compressed air into the molten copper. In order to providing oxygen for the oxidation reaction and achieving impurity removal.

The water-cooled jacket is responsible for removing heat and protecting the steel structure. Forced cooling prevents the duct from melting.

Slag Discharge Port:

The slag discharge port is located above the copper molten surface, corresponding to the height of the oxide slag layer. During oxidation, impurities continuously form slag, which floats on the surface of the molten copper. The slag outlet is opened periodically to discharge the slag. It controlled the thickness of the slag layer in the molten pool. In order to preventing excessive slag from blocking radiant heat and prolonging the smelting cycle.

Copper Tap:

After reduction and deoxidation are complete, the opening is opened to release qualified liquid anode copper. The molten copper flows out under its own weight. It is fed into a chute, and transported to the anode casting machine. Then obtain the anode plate.

Ruitai Lianxin silica bricks

If you choose a bad brick for your glass kiln, the roof will drop flakes into the glass liquid and ruin the whole batch of production. That is why a professional silica refractory brick company always tells you to look at the raw material quartzite purity and the firing temperature inside the tunnel kiln, rather than just choosing by low cost.

1.Crucial silica brick properties for glass kilns

Let us look closely at the actual silica fire brick features.

The main silica brick composition is SiO2, which must be more than 96% for glass furnace application.

Why do glass engineers only want this material for the crown? The answer is in the unique silica brick properties at high heat.

Ruitai Lianxin silica refractory bricks

When the furnace heats up, the brick expands. But once it passes 600°C, the volume becomes completely stable. It does not shrink back when running at high temperatures.

Also, the silica brick thermal conductivity rises as the temperature goes up, which helps keep the heat distribution balanced across the massive furnace arch.

Another point is the weight. Our standard silica brick density is controlled around 1.8 to 1.95 g/cm³. This light weight is excellent because it reduces the total dead load on the kiln supporting steel structure, preventing structural failure during long-term operation.

2.Silica firebrick dimensions and specifications

In our manufacturing plant, we produce many different silica brick specifications depending on the specific kiln drawings.

Buyers often ask for standard 230x114x65mm bricks for simple walls, but for glass melting furnace crowns, you need large wedge bricks, arch bricks, and heavy special shapes.

You can check all the precise measurements and tolerances in our standard silica brick catalogue and technical silica brick datasheet.

3.Silica refractories application and factory price

The main silica refractory brick uses are concentrated in the crown, arch, and breast walls of glass tank furnaces, as well as hot blast stoves and coke ovens.

For glass makers, this specific silica brick application is irreplaceable because the acid gas coming from the melting glass batch does not corrode SiO2 materials.

silica fire brick

If you are searching for a reliable silica refractory fire brick factory in China, Ruitai Lianxin gives you direct factory wholesale prices.

The actual silica brick price depends on the raw material grade and the total firing time in our kilns. We make sure every single brick gets enough firing time to convert quartz into tridymite completely, preventing risky expansion problems when you start your furnace.

When you buy wholesale silica bricks for your non-ferrous furnaces, the only thing that matters is if the brick can survive the high heat. It is not about nice words. It is about the raw quartz stone, the SiO2 purity, and how long the brick stays in the firing kiln.

silica fire brick

1.Production and materials

A good silica refractory brick needs more than 95% or 96% SiO2. We use clean quartzite stone, crush it, mix with mineralizers like lime, and press it under heavy machines.

Then we fire it in a long tunnel kiln for over 4-5 days. This long heating makes sure the quartz changes into tridymite and cristobalite completely.

If the firing time is short, the brick will crack inside your furnace. This is why our silica fire brick lasts longer in harsh smelting conditions.

2.Check the technical parameters

Before you buy, you must check the silica brick datasheet from your supplier.

Do not just look at the price. Look at the silica brick density. Standard quality reaches around 2.34g/cm3 to 2.38g/cm3. True density shows how well it was fired.

Another point is silica brick thermal conductivity. At high temperatures over 1000 degrees, it increases, which is good for heat transfer in furnace roofs.

We have standard silica brick dimensions like 230x114x65mm in stock.

But for non-ferrous kilns, you usually need special shapes. Our engineering team can make custom moulds based on your silica brick specifications.

3.Real applications and properties

The silica brick refractory performance is outstanding because it has high refractoriness under load. It means under high heat and heavy weight, it does not deform.

silica brick company

That is why the primary silica brick uses are in furnace crowns, especially glass melting kilns and non-ferrous smelting furnace roofs.

In these areas, the silica brick application works perfectly because it resists acid slag corrosion and stays strong at 1600°C.

4.Buying and shipping

Every buyer wants a cheap silica brick price, but quality determines your true kiln maintenance cost.

As a trusted silica brick exporter, we ship hundreds of tons every month. We pack them with strong wooden pallets and plastic films so they don’t break during sea shipping.

If you want to see our production capacity, ask our silica brick company for the complete silica brick catalogue. Ruitai Lianxin welcomes you to visit our actual workshop to check the quality yourself.

Does your copper smelting reverberatory furnace use magnesia-chrome bricks? Let’s discuss magnesia-chrome bricks together.

Operating Conditions of a Copper Smelting Reverberatory Furnace

copper smelting reverberatory furnace

The reverberatory furnace operates at a long-term temperature of 1250–1550℃. The furnace interior is rich in slag containing Fe₃O₄, Cu₂O, FeO, etc. The slag is highly alkaline and easily penetrates into the refractory bricks.

During the charging process, the furnace will experience cooling of cold charge. Short-term cooling during copper tapping. Temporary shutdown for maintenance. And restarting at higher temperatures.

When the furnace is operating at full load for extended periods, the temperature in the slag line area is even higher. If the lining is not properly selected, bulging and swelling of the furnace walls and bottom can occur, hindering the copper tapping and slag discharge processes and causing slag accumulation and blockage.

Advantages and Characteristics of Magnesia-Chrome Bricks

Magnesia-chrome bricks have a refractoriness exceeding 1800℃. They do not melt themselves, separating the high-temperature liquid phase from the steel furnace shell, preventing high-temperature burn-through of the steel plate, copper and slag leakage, and ensuring safe continuous smelting production.

magnesia chrome Brick

The Role of Magnesia-Chrome Bricks in Reverberatory Furnaces

Magnesia-chrome bricks are used as linings for the slag line, furnace bottom, and copper tapping opening in copper smelting reverberatory furnaces. They prevent the penetration and erosion of copper slag and magnetite, and resist the scouring and impact of copper matte and molten copper.

Its excellent thermal shock stability makes it suitable for the alternating hot and cold temperatures caused by charging and copper tapping. It is not prone to creep and deformation at high temperatures. And it is resistant to corrosion from sulfurized flue gas inside the furnace. Thus extending the furnace lining life, isolating the furnace shell from high-temperature melt, and ensuring continuous and stable smelting operation.
