What are the classifications of aluminum bricks?

Aluminum bricks (high-alumina bricks) are refractory materials with an alumina content ≥48%. They are mainly classified according to three dimensions: alumina content, manufacturing process, and application, adapting to different high-temperature industrial scenarios.

1. Alumina content

Based on alumina content, they can be divided into three categories, which is the most fundamental classification method.

First, Grade III aluminum bricks, with an alumina content of 48%~60%, offer high cost-effectiveness and are used in low-temperature sections of general industrial kilns.

Second, Grade II aluminum bricks, with an alumina content of 60%~75%, offer moderate refractoriness and corrosion resistance, suitable for conventional kilns in the steel and cement industries.

Third, Grade I aluminum bricks, with an alumina content ≥75%, offer high refractoriness and are mostly used in high-temperature critical sections. Those with an alumina content ≥90% are called corundum bricks, exhibiting outstanding wear resistance.

2. Manufacturing process

Based on the manufacturing process, they can be divided into sintered and unsintered types. Sintered aluminum bricks are sintered at 1500~1600℃, resulting in high mechanical strength and wide application. Unfired aluminum bricks are manufactured through high-pressure molding, exhibiting good thermal shock resistance but lower strength, making them unsuitable for load-bearing applications.

3. Applications

Based on their application, alumina bricks can be categorized into specialized types such as anti-spading, alkali-resistant, and low-creep bricks. Anti-spading aluminum bricks resist rapid temperature changes, alkali-resistant alumina bricks resist alkaline corrosion, and low-creep aluminum bricks are suitable for long-term high-temperature load applications. These are tailored to different operating conditions, such as cement rotary kilns and alkaline atmosphere kilns. Due to their inherent properties, various types of aluminum bricks are widely used in high-temperature industrial fields such as metallurgy, cement, and glass.
