The purpose of this trip was clear: to conduct a rigorous on-site quality inspection of a batch of specially made refractory bricks used in a high-strength carbon black reactor.
1. Challenge: Withstanding the test of a charcoal furnace
As is well known, carbon black production places extremely stringent requirements on refractory linings. The Indian partners need materials that can withstand extreme thermal shock and strong chemical corrosion. They are particularly interested in two high-performance materials: high-zirconia bricks and corundum bricks.
For critical “hot spot” areas where furnace temperatures may exceed 1800°C, the customer requested the use of a specific zirconia-corundum composite material with high packing density and near-zero apparent porosity to prevent the infiltration of high-temperature gases.
2. Refractory brick inspection process
During their visit, the Indian clients went deep into the core areas of the workshop, meticulously inspecting the work.

(1) Dimensional accuracy:
The team used digital calipers to verify that the dimensional tolerances of the corundum bricks were controlled within ±0.5 mm. This was to ensure tight joints and minimize heat loss.
(2) Physical properties:
We conducted field tests on high zirconia bricks, focusing on their load refractoriness. The results confirmed that its stability far exceeded industry standards.
(3) Appearance consistency:
We inspected each tray of bricks for surface cracks or “black spots” to ensure that the sintering process inside the high-temperature tunnel was completely uniform.
