What types of refractory bricks are used in blast furnaces?

The operating conditions of different parts of a blast furnace vary significantly, therefore the refractory bricks used in a blast furnace need to be selected specifically according to temperature, erosion and wear. Proper configuration can not only extend the furnace life, but also reduce overall operating costs.

1.Selection principles of refractory bricks for blast furnaces

The characteristics of a blast furnace dictate the stringent requirements for its lining materials.

First, the temperature inside the blast furnace is extremely high, usually above 1400℃. Therefore, refractory bricks must have excellent refractoriness.

Secondly, in practical applications of blast furnaces, whether for steelmaking or smelting other metals, the furnace charge and molten material will cause strong chemical erosion and physical scouring of the furnace lining.

In addition, the working environment and damage mechanisms of different parts of the blast furnace are also different.

Therefore, these factors must be comprehensively considered when selecting refractory bricks. Only in this way can the lifespan and operating efficiency of the furnace lining be ensured. This will also indirectly affect the overall cost of blast furnace prices.

2.Brick configuration in different areas of the blast furnace

The temperature, erosion (slag/molten metal/gas), scouring and mechanical impact vary greatly in different parts of the blast furnace. Refractory bricks must be specially matched to these differences.

(1)Middle and upper part of furnace body

The temperature here is relatively low and chemical erosion is weak, so high-strength, high-alumina bricks are usually used.

(2)Furnace hearth

The hearth area is subjected to chemical erosion from molten iron and slag over a long period of time, so carbon bricks or corundum bricks are usually used. These types of bricks are highly impermeable and resistant to high temperatures.

(3)Furnace belly and furnace waist

In areas such as the lower part of the furnace body, the waist of the furnace, and the belly of the furnace, where they are subjected to intense scouring by high-temperature airflow and molten material, silicon carbide bricks with excellent erosion resistance and wear resistance are often selected.

3.Recommendations for Refractory Brick Selection

The price of a blast furnace includes not only the equipment itself, but also the price of various refractory materials. Of course, simply pursuing low-priced bricks is not advisable, because frequent shutdowns for maintenance will only increase overall costs.

Meanwhile, high-quality refractory brick suppliers will provide technical support to help optimize furnace lining design. Therefore, when choosing a partner, you should focus on examining their technical strength and service system.

A suitable supplier can not only provide a stable supply, but also offer professional advice on matching refractory bricks for blast furnaces.
