High Alumina Fire Bricks VS. Clay Bricks for Blast Furnace Stoves

High-alumina fire bricks and clay bricks are two of the most commonly used refractory materials in hot blast stoves, but their performances differ significantly, and therefore their applicable scenarios are also different.

1. Performance differences

(1) Differences in chemical composition and heat resistance

High-alumina bricks use bauxite as the main raw material, and the Al₂O₃ content usually exceeds 48%. It not only has a higher load softening temperature, but also stronger resistance to slag erosion.

In contrast, clay fire bricks have a lower Al₂O₃ content, generally between 30% and 40%. Although it is more cost-effective, the long-term operating temperature should not exceed 1300℃.

Therefore, high-alumina bricks should be given priority in high-temperature areas, while clay bricks can be considered in medium- and low-temperature areas.

(2) Comparison of physical properties

In terms of physical properties, high-alumina bricks generally have higher load softening temperature and room temperature compressive strength than clay bricks. This makes it better able to withstand the pressure of high-load areas such as high vaults.

Although high-alumina bricks perform well in terms of wear resistance and corrosion resistance, clay bricks, due to their thermal stability advantage, are often used as auxiliary refractory materials in environments with frequent temperature fluctuations to balance the overall performance of the furnace lining.

2. Selection of the location of fire bricks in the hot blast stove

The operating conditions vary greatly in different parts of a hot blast stove, making it crucial to select high-quality refractory bricks appropriately.

In high-temperature areas such as the combustion chamber and the upper part of the regenerator, the temperature can reach over 1500℃, making high-alumina bricks a more reliable choice. Clay bricks can meet the requirements for medium and low temperature areas such as furnace walls and flues.

It is worth noting that some buyers focus too much on the price of refractory bricks and easily overlook the compatibility with different parts, which actually increases the frequency of later maintenance. Professional refractory brick suppliers typically offer complete solutions rather than quotes for individual products.

When choosing a refractory brick manufacturer, you should not only compare the unit price. Factors such as the purchase quantity and transportation distance also affect the final cost. Therefore, it is recommended to establish long-term cooperation with experienced and reputable refractory brick suppliers.
