Distinguishing Refractory Bricks

Refractory bricks, also known as firebricks, are essential materials in high-temperature industrial processes, serving as linings for furnaces, kilns, reactors, and other thermal equipment.

  1. Classification by Chemical Composition: The Fundamental Distinction

The chemical composition is the primary basis for classifying refractory bricks, as it determines their high-temperature performance and compatibility with various industrial environments. The main categories include acidic, neutral, and basic refractory bricks.

1.1 Acidic Refractory Bricks

Acidic refractory bricks are dominated by acidic oxides such as SiO₂ (silicon dioxide) and Al₂O₃ (aluminum oxide, in high proportions). They exhibit strong resistance to acidic slags and gases but are vulnerable to erosion by basic substances. Common types include silica bricks and fire clay bricks.

1.2 Neutral Refractory Bricks

Neutral refractory bricks are resistant to both acidic and basic slags, making them ideal for environments with complex chemical conditions. The main types are alumina bricks, chrome bricks, and carbon-containing refractory bricks.

1.3 Basic Refractory Bricks

Basic refractory bricks are composed of basic oxides like MgO (magnesium oxide) and CaO (calcium oxide). They are highly resistant to basic slags, making them indispensable in steelmaking processes such as converters and electric arc furnaces.

Magnesia Bricks: With MgO content over 85%, magnesia bricks have excellent resistance to basic slags and high temperatures (up to 2000℃). They are used in the linings of converters and secondary refining furnaces. They are typically yellowish-white or grayish-white and have a dense structure.

  1. Differentiation by Refractoriness: Measuring Heat Resistance

– Low-Refractory Brick: RUL below 1580℃, suitable for medium-temperature applications.

– Medium-Refractory Brick: RUL between 1580℃ and 1770℃, used in high-temperature furnaces with moderate heat requirements.

– High-Refractory Brick: RUL above 1770℃, designed specifically for extreme temperature environments.
